Slot Canyons Inn

Escalante Utah

For visitors to southwestern Utah one of the must see scenic drives is Scenic Byway 12, a nationally recognized byway and rated as one of the top scenic drives in America.  With Bryce Canyon National Park on one end, Capitol Reef National Park on the other, and with three state parks and a national monument along the way, this route is downright unforgettable. Central to this thoroughfare is the quaint and historic pioneer town of Escalante, and five miles west of town is a destination we think you’ll highly enjoy.

Joette Marie Rex, welcomes guests from around the world to her boutique inn, the Slot Canyons Inn.  For the past 15 years the inn has been home base for visitors wanting to explore the dramatic scenery of the surrounding area.  Bob and I recently spent some time with Joette Marie and you can view our short discussion with her in the video (next).  Bob and I both intend to return and visit Joette Marie very soon with our wives (Denise, and Susan), and Bob is anxious to bring some of the future groups that he guides to stay here. Wildlife & Attractions: Deer, wild turkeys, elk, and other animals roam the land around the Inn, which is also situated very close to the Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument.  Boulder Mountain, a large plateau situated behind the inn, has elevations ranging near 11,000′ and includes 80 lakes, many of which are stocked with trout.  Slot Canyons are plentiful in this region and this is the source of the name for the Slot Canyons Inn. Check out this nearby location that is part of Bryce Canyon National Park.

Lodging Style: Joette created her inn with a southwest Pueblo style architecture.  As a result the colors and style of the Inn match well with the surrounding terrain and massive rock hillside that is the backdrop to her land.  The Inn offers eight single king and queen rooms, along with two, 2-room suites that each sleep six people, and she also has completely dismantled and rebuilt a historic cabin that sleeps eight. The cabin was once owned by the famous “Miss Kitty” from the highly successful television western series Gunsmoke.  The rooms are each uniquely styled and decorated, and returning guest have their favorite rooms. Ask Joette which she might recommend for you.

Native American History:  Interestingly a research team from a major university was able to identify and excavate an area just behind the Inn that shows evidence of Native American habitation going back 10,000 years. Petroglyphs and pictographs adorn the walls of a rock cliff face that are easily accessible for viewing by guests.
A Gathering Place:  The Inn is literally at the confluence of Birch Creek and North Creek which are the two main tributaries that make up the beginning of the Escalante River which starts right at the Slot Canyon Inn.

Breakfast and Dinner: In recent years the North Creek Grill has been operating on the property of the Slot Canyons Inn.  This restaurant offers brick oven fired pizza, grilled steaks, and other delectables in an outdoor dining environment.  Dining services are available from April to October.  For breakfast Joette Marie offers guests delicious options with in-house prepared home-made breads, jams, quiches, granola, and breakfast casseroles. We tried her omelet, muffins, and fruit and found it all delicious.

Kodachrome Basin State Park

All things considered this is a getaway that will rival, if not surpass, some of your best prior experiences, and we highly recommend that you make plans soon to visit Joette Marie and to stay at the Slot Canyons Inn.
